Function and Services
What we do:
The Judge of Probate is elected to a four-year term to fulfill the duties of Probate Judge as prescribed in Connecticut General Statutes. Those duties include family estate matters, guardianships, legal adoptions, and termination of parental rights.
The Connecticut Probate Courts are statutory in nature, having powers granted under the Connecticut General Statutes. Woodstock's Probate Court is one of the 117 probate districts in CT. Its services and functions are listed below.
Hearings are informal and offer people the opportunity to be heard, seek additional information, and resolve differences.
The Judge is not allowed to give legal advice, but may help direct filling out of appropriate forms.
Contact us if you need help on:
- Adoptions
- Appointment of Executors for wills
- Approval of Accounting submitted by Trustees, Conservators, and Administrators of decedents' estates
- Conservatorships
- Estates
- Guardianships (appointment for minors' estates and the handicapped)
- Name Changes
- Passports
- Termination of Parental Rights
- Transfer of ownership for real estate after one owner dies
- Trusts
- Weddings (can perform)
Note: If someone passes away, whether or not they have a will, the nominated Executor needs to at least see the Judge of Probate to see if anything has to be done. If the deceased has a will and "no estate," the will still needs to be filed.
