Recreation Commission

MISSION

The purpose of the Recreation Commission to promote the general welfare of the community by providing recreational activities for children and other citizens of the Town of Woodstock.

MEETING SCHEDULE

The full Recreation Commission meets monthly, usually on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Special Subcommittee meetings are scheduled as needed. Agendas and minutes are available at the Town Hall and on this website. Meetings are open to the public.

MEMBERSHIP

The Recreation Commission is a five member group created by the Board of Selectmen. The terms of office are two years running concurrently with the Board of Selectmen each municipal election.

We need volunteers. Do you have great ideas? Would you like to see new programs? Do you have a little time? If you would like more information on how to get involved with this fun and dedicated commission, call us at 860-928-6595 ext. 332.

RECREATION NEWS

Woodstock Fuel Assistance Donations: The Woodstock Recreation Commission is pleased to announce that we were able to donate $1,000 from the Memorial Day 10K Road Race proceeds to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund. We donated an additional $700 to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund from the proceeds of our 6th Annual Town Wide Tag Sale. Thank you to our sponsors for those two events, and to everyone who participated. 

New Recreation Park Facility: Located on Senexet Village Road (Behind the Beeches Real Estate off Route 171): Soccer field, walking trail, and basketball court. For more information contact the Recreation Department.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

Wii for SeniorsWii Gaming for Woodstock Seniors: The Wii Gaming System is a fun, interactive program that promotes healthy lifestyles through physical active play. Games include tennis, bowling, golf, and dancing. Games are played on a big screen with the use of hand held controllers. The cost is FREE. The program is located at  the Woodstock Town Hall, lower level, from 10:00 am to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please contact the recreation director to schedule your introductory session. All participants must fill out a waiver of liability prior to using the game system. Click here to download the waiver.

 

 

2018-2019 RECREATION PROGRAMS  

Senior Fitness - We are working to start another Senior Fitness class soon.

Intro to Italian Language & Cooking: The goal of this program is to introduce Woodstock Middle School students to Italian language and culture by exploring regional foods of Italy. Each week we will focus on a different regional Italian dish, such as Le busiate alla trapanese and le panelle. Before learning how to make the dish, we will learn about the region it comes from, and we will learn vocabulary and pronunciation of words associated with the dish. The class will run on Mondays March 4, 11, 18, 25 & April 1, 8 from 2:30-4:30 pm. Cost is $40. Click here to download a registration form.

Fitness Boot Camp: Boot Camp is a challenging, fun, and supportive workout! You can go at your own pace and work your way up to your goals. This program is for all fitness levels. The boot camp workout consists of cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and stretching. Each boot camp workout is 45 minutes long. Classes are Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11:15 am at the Woodstock Town Hall, lower level room 1 on March 12, 19, 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (8 Weeks total). Cost: $64 (8 classes) or $35 (4 classes). Preregistration is preferred. Drop in rate $10 per class. Click here to download a registration form.

HIIT Fitness Class: HIITS is High Intensity Interval Training. Test your limit with this fast-paced class! Over 45 minutes we will work sets followed by active rest. We will use our body weight to work every muscle group and our cardiovascular fitness. This class runs Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:15 pm. Classes at Woodstock Town Hall, lower level room 1 on May 9, 23, 30, June 13 AND Classes held at WMS Music Room May 2, 16, and June 6, 20 (8 Weeks total). Cost:  $64 (8 classes) or $35 (4 classes). Preregistration is preferred. Drop in Rate $10 per class. Click here to download a registration form.

Quilting Class: Our Quilting class meets for 10 weeks in room B130 at the Woodstock Academy, North Campus. Cost is $35 for 10 classes. Classes meet from 7-10 pm on the following dates: February 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 28 (NO CLASS 3/21), April 4, 11, 18 (Snow Date 4/25). Space is limited to 15 quilters. Participants supply their own equipment, materials, and sewing machines. Click here to download a registration form.

Kids Yoga: After school yoga for third and fourth graders, held at Woodstock Elementary School lobby on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30. Class size is limited to 12 participants. There are two sessions, each session is 4 weeks long and costs $36. Dates for Session I are 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20 with a snow date of 3/27. Session II dates are 4/3, 4/10, (No Class 4/17), 4/24, 5/1 with a snow date of 5/8. Click here to download a registration form.

Ski Club: Ski and Snowboard Club starts Tuesday January 8th and runs on the following Tuesdays: January 8, January 15, January 22, January 29, February 5, February 12. Make up dates are February 26 and March 5. Students in grades 5-12 are eligible. 

Students, chaperones, and our ski coordinator are transported to Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA, by motor coach directly after school.  Students either bring their own equipment or rent at the mountain.  Students also have the opportunity to take lessons before enjoying free time on the mountain.  Students ski/snowboard in groups and/or with chaperones.  Upon return, parents will pick up their children at Woodstock Middle School (approximately 8:45 pm). 

Registration begins October 1, 2018.  **Registrations will be in two parts:

  1. Contact and Authorization for Medical Treatment Forms will be available at the Middle School and Academy offices and at the town hall.
  2. Your registration packet will have an online code (WSTR) to register for our program through Wachusetts. This can be found online at www.wachusett.com. This is to register for ski passes, lessons and/or equipment. 

BOTH steps must be completed and payment in full made for transportation. Registration packets must be returned to the Woodstock Town Hall so the skier/snowboarder may be issued a number to save a seat on the bus. Hand or mail in registration to Woodstock Recreation, 415 Route 169, Woodstock CT 06281 or leave in an envelope in the drop box located outside town hall.

This program is offered on a first come, first served basis to the first 100 students only.  All other registrations received will be placed on a wait list.  All registrations to Wachusetts HAVE to be done by December 5, 2018 or there is a $20 late charge.

Recreational Basketball: Registration forms for our Kindergarten-4th grade and 5th-8th grade recreation basketball leagues are available to download here. Registration deadline for our K-4 program is December 21, 2018. Registration deadline for our 5-8 program is November 28 for girls, and November 29 for boys. Evaluations with skills and drills will be held at the WMS gymnasium on those dates for girls and boys in grades 5-8. 

Winter Volleyball: Develop and improve your skills as you practice and scrimmage over eight weeks this winter. Located at the Pomfret School Gym on Sundays from 1:30-3:00. Dates are January 6, 13, 20, February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3. Cost is $150. Download registration form here.

Yoga Winter 1 Session will be held at the Woodstock Town Hall, lower level room 1. Classes will take place on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm on the following dates: January 7, 14, 28, February 4, 11, 25, March 4, 11. There will be no classes on January 21 and February 18. The cost is $64 for 8 classes, $35 for 4 classes, or a drop in rate of $10 per class. Adult Co-Ed Basketball and Volleyball play Monday and Tuesday nights respectively at the WMS gymnasium. Due to the children's recreational basketball program both groups will now start at 8:30 pm and play till 10:30 pm. Contact the recreation director for more information.

Upcoming Programs: We will have a spring babysitting training course, check back for dates. We are also looking into offering some after school programs later this winter, including a cooking class and hopefully children's yoga and/or zumba.

Registration and payment for any program can be mailed to WRC, 415 Route 169, Woodstock CT 06281. Alternatively they can be left in the drop box outside of town hall, in the drop box on the wall next to the Recreation office, or handed to the recreation director.
